Part 1 of The United States of Europe

In part 1 of T.R. Reid's The United States of Europe, he shows the audience growth of the European Union (EU), Americans, he argues, seem to be in a state of denial about what Europe has achieved. They've dedicated shows to downing America, it's hilarious how Europeans portray the " white trash" America. Every European Nation seems to have its own qualities to the point in which they dislike of Americans because the British think of Americans to be fat, loud, and ignorant. United States foreign policy and particulary the foreign policy of George W. Bush, being the most unpopular American president in a century among Europeans, but because of the U.S. forein policy particulary George W. Bush is the main reason for the hatred of America in recent years because all over the continent today, there are many things about the U.S. people can't stand or even understand, or both. Americans pop culture (TV) seems to be important to Europeans, opposition to Lapharn's money and class in America because Europe puts celebrities high too, but the simple fact of the matter is Europeans like American stuff. Europeans buy U.S. products by choice because Europe as the British ruled India at one point, waged no opium war to force the revolting coke down our throats, but it was Europe who bought the whole package because they wanted it. Europeans who had visited the states found themselves charmed by American ways, so John Sutherland wrote after his trip to U.S.A, free refills of coffee ( without asking), Newspaper vendomats on street corners, "paper or plastic" what bagger says in your friendly 24-hour supermarket) ,drive through banking, high school graduations and regular class reunions, free or cut price parking at cinemas and restarants and fridges big enough for a 30 pound turkey. But it's funny how Europeans viewed patriotism especially in the U.S. as peculiar because most Europeans were born after the second world war into a somewhat extremely confusing sight of patriotism. Notice how Mr. Reid says " is the transformation of the olympic Games into yet another American Festival of Victory, " Festival of Victory" for U.S. equals olympics seen by Europeans, basically they care more about an American victory than they do about sportsmanship. America's attitude with winning was disgusting to European's, the reason why Europeans thought of America as ignorance because they seemed wonderfully courteous to strangers, yet indiscriminately shoot kids in schools, believing they are masters of the world when they know nothing of what goes on outside their shores which is proof of there ignorance. The thing that really annoyed Europeans was that this nation had perceived to be ignorant to the rest of the world, but because they had the wealth and power to dominate much of it. All of Europe felt the need to be compassionate towards Americans after 9/11 and were in it until a bit after the war began, September 11 bought us together, but only temporarily because there will always be major differences across the atlantic and will not go away. In order to express these emotions, T.R. Reid uses a few literary devices. On occassion, I notice the use of humor and change in tone, but his use of anecdotes is the main literary device used.

Do you think we have an ocean of prejudice and ignorance on both sides of the Atlantic, if so is it a real problem?

  1. To answer your question prejudice is ignorance of the existence of the soul, I mean lots of people have an unreasonable or unfair dislike for lots of reasons and lack of understanding, fear, and indoctrined hatred. I do believe it is a problem, but not a very serious problem at the time.

  2. I agree with how you said Europeans dislike Americans and think of us to be fat, loud, and ignorant because it's true in some ways, but Europeans liked American porducts which is funny, but they hated Americans.
